If you read Part 1, you’ll know that Erik and I didn’t meet on the best of terms. Our interactions did not get better from there.
We had a small group of mutual friends. One evening our friend Dylan had us go fishing with him. Erik, of course, is a big fisherman. I also really like to fish. I agreed.
The three of us went out. In Valdez it’s possible to fish the ocean right from the shore. When the fish are in, it’s an absolute swarm. The water churns with fins. It’s a great opportunity to catch a lot of salmon in a short amount of time.
There we were: casting and casting. Catching nothing. Suddenly Erik says, “I don’t know if you’ve been feeling any pressure from anybody for us to get together, but I have. I just want you to know that I want to be friends.”
I was stunned. It was out of nowhere. I hadn’t been thinking of him in a particularly romantic way, but this just made it awkward.
“Um, I wasn’t aware we weren’t friends,” I said. I was a little offended. I hadn’t made any moves toward him, so why did he think he needed to inform me he wasn’t interested? A little presumptuous.
After fishing, the three of us went to the movies. I think we saw “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.” I didn’t like it all. I also really didn’t like the uncomfortable vibe after Erik had informed me he just wanted to be friends. This friendship wasn’t going well; a romance seemed more than unlikely.
How could we ever get past this and start dating? Stay tuned…

Very true! I have no idea how we managed to get past that, but I’m glad we did!
